Crews Prepare Maitland Boulevard Interchange for Future I-4 Widening

FDOT began work in early December to prepare the I-4/Maitland Boulevard Interchange area for improvements as part of the Ultimate I-4 Trans4mation. FDOT crews are stabilizing an area of soft soil near the eastbound lanes of I-4 north of Maitland Boulevard.

To support future widening of I-4 and the planned interchange improvements, a pond—created from a sinkhole that existed long before I-4 was built—must be filled and stabilized. FDOT crews are creating a replacement stormwater retention pond along the I-4 westbound lanes.

The stabilization effort began by temporarily shifting the eastbound lanes of I-4 away from workers and equipment. FDOT crews milled and resurfaced the exit ramp from eastbound I-4 to westbound Maitland Boulevard (Exit 90B). FDOT is installing guardrails and beginning the stabilization process.

The stabilization effort will be completed in two phases. Phase one, which will last 18 to 24 months, includes grouting the remnant sinkhole and then the placement of a 28 foot tall soil mound that will be supported by a retaining wall. Phase two includes monitoring of the soil settlement and compaction. The sheer mass and weight of the dirt will help to compact and consolidate the soil beneath it. Phase two will remain in place until the time when the ultimate I-4/Maitland interchange construction begins. Cost of the project is $8.9 Million.
