FDOT is planning major improvements to the interchange connecting Interstate 4 and S.R. 436 in Altamonte Springs as part of Ultimate I-4 construction. These planned improvements will widen I-4, improve safety, and enhance traffic flow to and from S.R. 436 by eliminating traffic signals that contribute to congestion.
The biggest improvement to the interchange will be its transformation into what is called a Single Point Urban Interchange. All traffic streams flowing into the interchange—those driving along S.R. 436, those turning from S.R. 436 onto I-4 and those exiting I-4 to S.R. 436—will be directed by a single set of synchronized traffic signals. Currently, this area uses three separate traffic signals to deal with these traffic streams, which results in blocked intersections when traffic is heavy.
Other improvements include a pedestrian walkway over I-4 and drainage modifications. Although no date is set for construction, FDOT is currently acquiring the necessary land. FDOT held a public meeting in mid-February to explain the project to impacted and surrounding residents and business people and to address any questions or concerns they may have.
