This year has been full of major milestones for Interstate 4. FDOT has opened many new ramps, wrapped up projects and installed technology that all provide easier, safer commutes for Central Florida drivers. The following is a quick look at the major I-4 construction and technological accomplishments of 2008.

I-4 and Maitland Boulevard Interchange


Florida Department of Transportation crews will shift eastbound Interstate 4 lanes to the right Dec. 11 between the exit ramps to Maitland Boulevard (Exits 90A and 90B) and the entrance ramp from Maitland Boulevard to eastbound I-4. Crews will close one or two eastbound I-4 lanes between the exit and entrance ramps from 11:30 p.m. until 6:00 a.m. nightly through Dec. 17 for milling and resurfacing, weather permitting. The lane shifts will remain in place through January.

Economic Impact of Highway Construction
President-elect Barack Obama recently announced his administration’s plans to make one of the largest investments into the country’s infrastructure in 50 years. In his weekly radio address on Dec. 6, Obama unveiled some of his plans to rebuild U.S. infrastructure and stimulate the slowing economy.

Kirkman Road Interchange Renovation to Improve Traffic Flow around Tourist and Business Hub
An important part of the Ultimate I-4 is the reconstruction of the interchange connecting I-4 and Kirkman Road, which leads into the heart of Orlando’s busiest business district and many area tourist attractions. Kirkman Road leads directly into Orlando’s greater metropolitan area and connects I-4 drivers to a host of tourist attractions in southwest Orange County, including Universal Orlando and International Drive.
