FHP Cracking Down on Drunk Driving this Labor Day
As Labor Day 2009 approaches, drivers across Central Florida are making plans for the holiday weekend, and will use Interstate 4 and other roadways in their travels. But while you attend parties, cook outs, family reunions and other events, the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) wants to make one message clear.

Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest.

Now through the Labor Day holiday weekend, FHP and other Florida law enforcement will aggressively seek out and arrest anyone driving under the influence of alcohol — or any other substance.

“Make no mistake. Our message is simple,” said Colonel John Czernis, director of FHP. “No matter what you drive – a passenger car, pickup, sport utility vehicle or motorcycle – if we catch you driving impaired, we will arrest you. No exceptions. No excuses. We will be out in force conducting sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols to get more drunk drivers off the road. We want everyone to play it safe and always designate a sober driver or find a different way home if they have been out drinking.”

In 2008, there were more than 22,200 alcohol-related crashes in Florida.  These crashes accounted for more than 1,100 fatalities and more than 15,700 injuries.
