What is Going On At the Maitland Interchange? |
|
Florida Department of Transportation crews are pumping grout into the soft soil at the Interstate 4 and Maitland Boulevard (State Road 414) interchange to stabilize the area for construction of the Ultimate I-4 improvements. Crews will pump a grout mixture consisting of fly ash, water, cement and sand into 100 primary and 220 secondary points at the interchange.
The amount of grout used at each point is determined by the depth of the limestone beneath the soft soil and the density of the soil. Some points may use more than 900 cubic yards of grout and extend to depths greater than 380 feet. The first completed point was more than 300 feet deep and used 795 cubic yards of grout. The grouting process stops approximately 50 feet below the ground’s surface.
Once grouting is complete, a 28-foot high mound of soil will be placed over the project area to further compact and strengthen the soil. The settlement of the soft soil will be monitored during and after construction to determine when the soil within the area has been adequately compressed.
