Increasing Efficiency at I-4 Interchanges

A Single Point Urban Interchange (SPUI) is a streamlined way to deal with traffic converging at two major highways and is gaining popularity as a means to improve traffic flow at some of the nation’s busiest intersections. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) plans to add several as part of the Ultimate I-4 project.

SPUIs connect two major roadways and direct traffic by a single set of synchronized traffic lights. The result is a safer and more efficient interchange that can be built in a smaller area. SPUIs help alleviate congestion by decreasing traffic backups that block the interchange.

As part of the Ultimate I-4 project, FDOT plans SPUIs at these locations:

• I-4 and State Road 436 Interchange

• Maitland Boulevard at Lake Destiny Drive

• Maitland Boulevard at Keller Road

• I-4 and State Road 50 (Colonial Drive) Interchange
